The Gap and the Gain

I recently came across this book by a coach, Dan Sullivan. It piqued my curiosity. What does it mean? As high achieving individuals, we tend to be looking ahead, setting goals and constantly working to reach them. However, the "ideal life" tends to be like the horizon, nice to aim for but never actually reachable. This tends to make us feel "yucky". It leads to us comparing our journey and our results with others, usually those we feel are ahead of us. As you can see in the picture, this evokes negative emotions such as failure, frustration, low self esteem etc. It can even dissuade us from taking action to keep going.

Instead, what if we trained ourselves to look at how far we have come? This is easy to do. Take a few minutes to close your eyes and take some deep breaths. Get as centered as you can. Now think back to a year ago, 3 years ago, 5 years ago. What have you accomplished since then? How much have you changed? What have been some major wins? For example, even just 2 years ago, I was not Board Certified in Lifestyle Medicine, had no idea about the power of coaching or how to start a business. I did not have a podcast, had no clue how to create a website, use Canva or get clients.

Now I feel much more accomplished and am definitely an improved version of myself!! AND that feels wonderful to acknowledge. It makes me feel so proud of my accomplishments. It also reminds me of how far I have come in my development as a human being.

So when you start feeling despondent or disappointed by "lack of progress" in any endeavor you may be involved in currently, do the exercise above. Even better, you can journal about it so that you have a written record!!!

And as always, if you need a life coach to help you practice these skills, please reach out to me. I love helping people with developing a more positive mindset so that they can become the very best and happiest versions of themselves!!!
